This summer Latitude 53 is collaborating with Downtown Live to facilitate three workshops with Elsa Robinson at Root 107 on July 24, 31 and August 7 from 2-4:30 PM.

All workshops are 2.5 hours and limited to 16 participants



Elsa Robinson is a Jamaican-Canadian multi-media artist and teacher. Her decades-long devotion  to artistic practice has imbued her work with vibrancy, versatility and an intuitive spiritual  poignancy through which she is able to transmit her deep love and care for humanity. Ms.  Robinson first worked as a self-taught artist, and today she holds the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design from the University of Alberta and the degree of Master of Fine Arts from the  Vermont College of Fine Arts.  

Ms. Robinson’s teaching career began in Jamaica where she specialized in Special Education for  the Deaf. After arriving in Edmonton, she completed the Bachelor of Education degree and has  taught both adults and youth in English, ESL and French Immersion programs here in Edmonton. She is also a passionate arts educator who facilitates workshops for artists of all ages and  experience levels.

Elsa Robinson’s solo exhibition Sankofa is currently on view at Latitude 53 until September 25, 2021. 



Workshop I: Me/Abstract Self Portrait | July 24, 2pm

The workshop is designed for beginner and intermediate art learners. Each participant will create a two-dimensional piece of art that expresses selected aspects of the participant’s personality. If time allows, those participants who wish, will be given time to share their work with the group at the end of the workshop.

Concepts to be introduced:

• Elements of composition including repetition, colour, shape, placement of objects, balance, background

• Use of background ground and foreground will also be introduced.

• Symbolism of colours and shapes


Workshop II: Paint & Create | July 31, 2pm

This workshop allows participants to follow the facilitators step by step instructions to create a painting. Elsa will select an image that is of interest to participants, that offers a reasonable level of challenge for beginner and intermediate art makers in completing the painting, and that can be successfully completed in the time frame.

1. Paint – participants are guided through step by step instructions to create the image presented by Elsa.

2. Create - Once the painting is complete, participants are guided in adding something of their own to the image, either on the background area or within the main image. This can be a colour, or shape or texture that they like.


Workshop III: Batik Collage | August 7, 2pm

Elsa will give a short presentation on the organ of batik. Participants will be guided through making a collage using batiked squares of paper. Those participants who wish, will be given time to share their work with the group at the end of the workshop.
