ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Through this workshop we will go through some Whacking principles and use them as tools to make a short homemade creation. The workshop will also present inspirations specific to this discipline and information about the history behind this practice. The explorations will be as much about how to approach interpretation as they will be about the research of movement. It is not necessary to have any previous knowledge in this dance, the exercises will be adapted for everyone and the goal will be to inspire you to create. The workshop will include a technical part, a theoretical part and a creative part. You can familiarize yourself with Axelle's approach on her instagram @axelle_ebony or @asymmetry. creations.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Axelle is a well-known artist both locally and internationally for her passion, creativity and unique sensitivity. An eager performer, choreographer and curator that aims to share with no limits wherever she goes. Trained in Whacking, Hip Hop and contemporary she uses her knowledge to build new esthetic with each collaboration. Some of her outstanding work includes; dancing and choreographing for Dominique Fils-Aimé, Arcade Fire, Afrotronix, Leif Vollebekk, Braids and more, has well as founding in 2012 the non-profit 100 Lux which support professional street dancers in Montreal and organizing one of the biggest Whacking battles in Canada for more than 10 years called Hot Mess. Axelle has developed her own movement approach to Whacking which she pushes through her company Asymmetry creations. She teaches that approach and Whacking techniques in master classes and workshops around the world. As a performer she leaves a mark, has an intense and honest interpretation, and uses that strength for cause like the recognition of Pan-African cultures in work such as “Our bodies back” for Sadle’s Wells in collaboration with Jonzi D and Jessica Moore that received a vast media coverage. Her potential is endless and she doesn’t limit herself creatively and participates in the growth of the artists, commercial and street culture dance scenes.
