Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition as men get older. With age, the size of the prostate increases and eventually, affected individuals may experience difficulty urinating, and have a more frequent and urgent need to urinate. In some cases, trans-urethral resection surgery of the prostate is required. This method through the urethra is less invasive than open surgery but still requires hospitalization. At Lakeshore General Hospital, nearly 400 such procedures are performed each year.
In order to improve urology treatments, the Foundation is funding the acquisition of four new technology surgical devices, which allow for safer procedures. Patients will be treated in day surgery instead of being hospitalized and will recover more quickly.
